The truth is talk therapy rarely heals anxiety.
You might have been to therapy before and were told the best treatment for anxiety is to “replace thoughts with better thoughts.”
Maybe you spent months, or even years, going to sessions week after week - diving deep into your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, leaving you with a textbook worth of knowledge about your patterns and anxiety, but no actual long-term relief.
This is because anxiety is not actually about your thoughts. Chronic anxiety is rooted in past experiences that caused your fight or flight response to kick on - and it never fully turned off.
These experiences are essentially stuck, keeping your anxiety automatically playing on a loop - but now it is finally time to liberate yourself from the cycle.
The key to reducing or eliminating anxiety is to use methods designed to process and clear the past experiences that started it in the first place.
EMDR Therapy
Eye movement and desensitization reprocessing therapy (EMDR) incorporates bilateral stimulation to help process distressing thoughts and feelings and reduce or eliminate the emotional charge associated with them. You don’t need to remember specific experiences to get started, we can begin by targeting the feelings and sensations associated with your anxiety.
IFS Therapy
Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) will teach you to view your mind as a system of "parts" within yourself. This form of therapy helps you gain awareness of and actively change automatic responses. It can help you explore and understand the internal aspects of yourself that contribute to your anxiety, fostering emotional regulation and overall wellbeing.
Narrative Therapy
Narrative Therapy focuses on the stories you tell yourself about your life and how these narratives shape your identity and experiences. You will learn how to externalize your concerns and separate yourself from problems by exploring and reconstructing the meaning attached to your stories. This form of therapy will help you cultivate self-compassion and grace.
Anxiety treatment should go way beyond coping skills and worksheets.
It is possible to be free of your anxiety and move forward, even if you don’t know what that feels and looks like yet.
